A Capping Scratcher is used to remove the wax capping on either honey frames or brood cells for inspections. Great for checking for varroa presence in cells.
This Capping Scratcher is also great for removing unwanted capped brood straight from the comb and will cause very little damage to the cells, thereby leaving the Bees with a bit of renovation work to restore the cells (preventing a complete re-build which wastes a lot of energy and nectar)
Sometimes you get brood where it shouldn’t be – maybe in your honey frame, or drones being laid during the season.
Drones cells are very desirable for the Varroa destructor mite due to the longer gestation period. You can use the Capping Scratcher to pull out brood so you can check for the level of varroa mites.
