The Management Agency Important Messages
From the National Compliance Manager, Clifton King
|2021 is rapidly coming to an end, and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank beekeepers for your commitment to eliminating AFB, your engagement on the future of the National American Foulbrood Pest Management Plan and inform you of some important information prior to the holidays.|
Firstly, I’d like to thank all beekeepers that participated in the second round of consultation for the future of the National American Foulbrood Pest Management Plan. By attending one of the webinars or roadshow events, and making a submission of feedback, you have helped to contribute towards the next 10 years of the PMP. The personal highlight for myself were the roadshow events which gave me the opportunity to meet with beekeepers nationwide to learn more about your AFB elimination priorities.
Your feedback from the first round of consultation was instrumental to the development of the proposed enhancements to the pest management plan, and your feedback from the second round will assist us to develop a formal proposal to extend the pest management plan for a further 10 years. We expect that the proposal will be ready for your consideration in the middle of 2022.American Foulbrood Beekeeper Levy for 2022/23 to remain the same at $40 per beekeeper and $1.70 per colony
The Management Agency has considered submissions on the 2022/23 budget proposal and decided that the rate of levy for 2022/23 should remain the same at $40 ($46 including GST) per beekeeper and $1.70 ($1.96 including GST) per colony.
Eighty-seven submissions were received. The Management Agency would like to thank submitters for their feedback on the proposed budget for 2022/23.
You can learn more about the decision to keep the rate of levy the same by going to our budget webpage here.Annual Report for 2020 / 2021 is now available
The last 12 months has been a transformational year for The Management Agency. We are continually striving to better support beekeepers in their fight against AFB, and 2020/21 was a year of significant improvement. We focussed on developing core capabilities and modernising our systems to support New Zealand’s AFB elimination plan into the future, including:Transferring the provision of apiary register and other services from Asurequality to The Management Agency, to provide beekeepers with a dedicated team committed to supporting beekeepers in their fight against AFB.Launching HiveHub to provide beekeepers with a modern purpose-built system that makes it easy for beekeepers to comply with their reporting and notification obligations. You can learn more about these changes and the implementation of the National American Foulbrood Pest Management Plan by clicking to view the 2020 / 2021 Annual Report here.Operational Plan Amendments
The Management Agency has amended the Operational Plan to improve the implementation of the National American Foulbrood Pest Management Plan. Key changes include:Conducting default Certificate of Inspections for all beekeepers that default on their Certificate of Inspection obligations instead of those that default on both their Certificate of Inspection and Annual Disease Return obligations.Requiring beekeepers to have no overdue invoices before entering into a Disease Elimination Conformity Agreement with The Management Agency.Updating the description of honey surveillance to better communicate that the purpose of honey surveillance is to provide evidence to confirm which beekeepers have negligible levels of AFB.You can view the full Operational Plan by clicking here. Fire Ban Recommendations during the summer
If you need to burn an AFB infected hive in the summer but your area has a complete fire ban, we recommend you check the fire permit status for your particular area at www.checkitsalright.nz and request a fire permit. You may like to approach your local fire station for advice also.
